Artist Statement

“Painting outdoors in direct light requires absolute presence. In a world driven by rapid digital acceleration, plein air painting forces a necessary slowing down—an intense observation between the artist, the canvas, and the physical atmosphere.”

Emily White is a contemporary landscape painter and portraitist working in oil and watercolor. Based in North Carolina, her work is grounded in direct observation, capturing the shifting light, rich color temperatures, and quiet rhythm of southern landscapes and live model subjects.

Her approach balances structural clarity with expressive mark-making, translating the immediate sensory experience of outdoor light into permanent, atmospheric studio and en plein air pieces.

The Journey: A Second Chapter

Art was not a default path for Emily—it was a deliberate choice driven by a deep calling for observational craft and creative sovereignty.

A former global technology executive who led data and AI strategy for major corporations, Emily continues to serve as an active corporate Board Director and teaches at Northwestern University.

In 2017, seeking a tactile, human counterpart to the high-stakes world of corporate boardrooms and screens, she picked up a sketchbook out of curiosity. What began as a daily habit quickly evolved into a dedicated practice centered on visual structure, form, and light.

Balancing corporate responsibilities, board governance, university teaching, and a relentless commitment to craft, Emily quietly completed over 100 sketchbooks and thousands of hours of observational practice. Realizing that visual creation was an essential life calling, she made the decisive shift in 2026 to dedicate her primary daily practice to full-time studio and en plein air painting.

Today, Emily applies that same executive rigor, structural analysis, and high-standard work ethic directly to the easel. Her work stands at the intersection of intellectual depth and fine art mastery—proof that true artistry thrives on focus, intentionality, and continuous reinvention.
